MEET JAIME KUHN
Animal Reiki practitioner and teacher, companion animal end-of-life doula, feline behavior professional, sound journey guide, and lifelong student of the human–animal bond.
The Heart Behind The Empowered Companion
I’m Jaime Kuhn, founder of The Empowered Companion®. My work is devoted to the relationships we share with animals—and to the ways those relationships shape how we love, care, grieve, learn, and grow.
I bring together Animal Reiki, feline behavior education, nervous-system awareness, sound, end-of-life doula care, grief support, and explorations of the human–animal bond. These may appear to be different kinds of work, but to me, they belong to one calling: helping animals and their people feel more seen, supported, connected, and respected throughout the life they share.
Sometimes that means helping a household understand a cat’s behavior with greater curiosity. Sometimes it means teaching someone to practice Animal Reiki without imposing on an animal. Sometimes it means creating a restorative experience through meditation and sound. And sometimes it means sitting beside a family as they prepare to say goodbye.
In every setting, I return to the same place: presence, compassion, relationship, and respect for the animal as a participant in their own experience.
A Calling Shaped by Animals
The Empowered Companion did not begin with a business plan. It began with a cat named TomTom.
In 2019, TomTom came into our home as a senior foster after losing his person, his dog companion, and everything familiar to him. He was frightened, grieving, and unwilling to eat. I was determined to save him. I watched him constantly, surrounded him with attention, and tried to convince him to choose what I believed was best.
Eventually, I stopped.
I told TomTom that I loved him, that I respected him, and that the decision was his. I stepped away from my urgency and gave him space. Several hours later, he ate.
That moment changed something fundamental in me. TomTom did not need me to overpower his experience with my fear or prove my love by trying harder. He needed respect, choice, patience, and room to find his own way.
He taught me that love is not always expressed by doing more. Sometimes love asks us to become still enough to listen.
That lesson became one of the foundations of The Empowered Companion: animals are not problems to solve, passive recipients of care, or supporting characters in human lives. They are individuals with preferences, agency, wisdom, and their own ways of experiencing the world.
One Teacher Led to Another
Charlie deepened my understanding of presence, mutual trust, and what it means to accompany an animal through the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life. His gentle wisdom helped me recognize that the relationship itself can be a place of teaching—and that some of the most meaningful guidance arrives without words.
Later, several cherished animals I had cared for through my pet-sitting work died within a short period of one another. These were not distant professional losses. They were animals whose routines, expressions, preferences, vulnerabilities, and families I had come to know intimately. Grieving them alongside the people who loved them revealed how deeply animal-care professionals can become woven into a family’s story—and how little support often surrounds animal death and the grief that follows.
Those losses became a quiet but persistent invitation toward companion animal end-of-life work.
Until the Path Was Clear
Then came Cougar.
Cougar’s death made the direction unmistakable. Loving him, accompanying him, and grieving him brought together everything the animals before him had been teaching me about presence, agency, connection, mortality, and the enduring nature of love. His passing did not create an entirely new path. It illuminated the path that had been forming beneath my feet all along.
Moving more fully into Animal Reiki, end-of-life care, grief support, education, sound, and relationship-centered behavior work became a way to honor what these animals had entrusted to me—and to help other families cultivate and carry bonds as meaningful as the ones that have transformed my life.
-
Animal Reiki
Animal-led meditation and Reiki practices invite us to become present without trying to control an animal’s experience. Animals remain free to approach, leave, rest, move, or participate in whatever way feels right to them.
-
Feline Behavior
Behavior is communication shaped by physical needs, emotions, environment, history, relationships, routines, and the nervous systems of everyone in the home. Meaningful change asks us to consider the whole household rather than treating the cat as the problem.
-
End-of-Life Care
The final chapter deserves the same attention and tenderness as every chapter before it. Doula care creates room for preparation, informed choices, comfort, presence, ritual, and support for the people who must carry the love forward.
-
Pet Loss Support
Grief reflects the significance of the relationship. It does not require justification, a particular timetable, or the approval of people who may not understand the depth of an animal bond.
-
Sound & Restorative Practice
Meditation, vibration, rhythm, and therapeutic sound can help us settle, listen more deeply, and reconnect with ourselves, animals, nature, and community.
-
Teaching & Community
Knowledge becomes most meaningful when it changes how we live and care. Through classes, workshops, gatherings, and professional experiences, I help others bring presence and compassion into their own relationships and communities.
A Place for the Practical and the Sacred
I believe evidence-informed education and sacred or intuitive practices can sit beside one another without either being diminished.
Feline behavior science can help us understand observable needs and patterns. Nervous-system awareness can help us notice how animals of all kinds and people affect one another. Reiki and meditation can invite quieter forms of attention. Ritual can help us give shape to experiences that ordinary language cannot fully hold.
I do not use spiritual language to impose a story on an animal or family. I do not claim that intuition replaces medical knowledge, or that Reiki replaces veterinary or qualified behavioral care. I remain attentive to the boundaries of my professional role and recommend additional support when a need falls outside my scope.
You do not need to share my beliefs to work with me. You are welcome whether your understanding is spiritual, secular, scientific, uncertain, evolving, or somewhere in between.
What matters is a willingness to approach the relationship with compassion, curiosity, and respect.
Education in Service of the Relationship
My animals and the families I have served are among my greatest teachers. Professional education gives me additional frameworks, ethical boundaries, and practical tools with which to honor what they have taught me.
My background includes:
Let Animals Lead® Level 3 Animal Reiki Practitioner and Teacher
Shelter Animal Reiki Association Teacher and Practitioner of Excellence
Certified Companion Animal End-of-Life Doula
Pet Loss Support Group Specialist
Certified Advanced Feline Training Professional
Certified Sound Healing Practitioner
Fear Free Shelter Program certification
Pet First Aid and CPR training
Second-degree Usui Holy Fire® III Reiki training
Bachelor’s degree in Art History
Master of Business Administration
I continue to study the human–animal bond, grief, feline behavior, nervous-system regulation, Animal Reiki, meditation, and end-of-life support. I view education as an ongoing responsibility rather than a finish line.
I am also an art lover, a seeker of meaning, a devoted companion to the animals who share my home, and—because not everything on an About page needs to be quite so serious—a Virgo.
I Do Not Build This Work Alone
The animals who have shared my life are not simply part of my personal story. They are teachers, companions, mirrors, comedians, boundary keepers, and guides.
Some remain beside me in physical form. Others continue to shape the work through the lessons and love they left behind. Each has contributed something different to the living philosophy of The Empowered Companion.
Their stories deserve more than a passing mention on my biography page, so I have created a place where you can meet them individually.
Let Love Lead—With Curiosity, Respect & Care
I do not believe love requires us to understand everything perfectly.
Love can look like asking a better question. Giving an animal more choice. Changing a familiar routine. Seeking professional support. Sitting quietly beside someone who is dying. Allowing grief to take the time it takes. Or accepting that another being’s experience belongs to them, even when we desperately wish we could make it different.
The Empowered Companion exists to support these moments: the joyful ones, the uncertain ones, the everyday ones, and the sacred ones.
